While many people relish the warmth of the summer, the heat, humidity, and intense UV rays can be difficult for your skin to deal with. As a result, many people find themselves battling various skin concerns at the height of the summer that they don’t usually experience at other times of the year.

If the arrival of the summer season has caused your skin to start acting up, don’t panic. Instead, keep reading as Bionyx shares some top summer skincare tips to ensure a fresh and radiant glow throughout the warmer months.

Keep Your Skin Clean…But Don’t Overdo It

Rhodium Mousse Cleanser

There’s a fine line between cleansing and over-cleansing – one that’s very easy to step over in the summer. With the skin producing more sebum than usual at this time of year, combined with the extra sweat that will be coating its surface, it can often seem as though you really need to ramp up your cleansing efforts if you want to rock a fresh face throughout the hotter months.

In some ways, this is true. You may need to upgrade to a more powerful cleanser in the summer to cut through the excess grease on your skin’s surface. However, you should still be mindful to pick a formula that isn’t going to strip away your skin’s natural protective barrier. Once this happens, your skin will become even more susceptible to UV damage.

If you aren’t sure how to find a cleanser that will efficiently clean your skin without harming that precious barrier, take a look at the Bionyx Rhodium Mousse Cleanser. Mousse cleansers are renowned for being gentle on the skin, yet still capable of forming a rich lather that sweeps impurities away.

If, after a very hot and sweaty day, you find that your skin still doesn’t feel clean after your evening cleanse, consider double cleansing. Start with an oil-based cleanser and then follow up with a water-based cleanser for an extra-thorough cleanse. Double cleansing is a great way of removing excess grease and sweat from the skin, making it a technique that many turn to during the summer months.

Exfoliate Regularly

Rhodium Complex Facial Peeling

Cleansing twice a day will go a long way in keeping your skin looking fresh and vibrant, especially if you’re double cleansing in the evenings. However, even then, some of that sweat and sebum will still manage to make its way into your pores in between cleanses. Once there, your cleanser won’t be able to reach them, which is where exfoliation comes in.

Exfoliation tackles blockages in the pores, releasing them to give the skin a much brighter and smoother finish. However, just like when it comes to cleansing, great care needs to be taken when choosing an exfoliator. Over-exfoliation is an increasingly common problem – one that you definitely don’t want to be dealing with!

This is why experts advise sticking to a gentle exfoliator in the summer months, just as you would in the winter. A formula like the Bionyx Rhodium Complex Facial Peeling would be ideal. However, since your skin will need more exfoliation in the summer, increase how often you exfoliate. Don’t go overboard with this – one extra exfoliation session each week is likely all you’ll need. Keep an eye on your skin as well to make sure that it’s happily tolerating the extra exfoliation.

Lighten Up Your Skincare Routine

As mentioned above, it’s so easy for the pores to end up clogged in the summer months. While there’s not much that you can do about the excess sweat and sebum your skin will be dealing with, you can still provide a helping hand by making sure you don’t add to this too much by overloading your skin with a long line of skincare products.

Yes, you should still be following a skincare routine in the summer months. However, keeping it light and minimal is key. The fewer products you apply to your skin, the less chance you’ll have of congesting it and contributing to breakouts.

So, what should your summer skincare routine consist of?

As always, start with a cleanser. Then, rather than layering multiple toners, essences, and serums, stick to just one or two of those products. Lock it all in with a moisturizer, give your skin some sun protection, and you’ll be good to go!

Hydrate, Hydrate, and Hydrate Some More

Facial Toner

With the skin naturally feeling oilier in the summer, people often think that they can cut back on hydration. After all, there’s so much moisture in the air around you with the increased humidity, so surely your skin can drink up some of that moisture?

Sadly, that’s not how things work. Instead, the intensity of the UV rays in the summer means that the skin barrier often struggles to function optimally. With one of the roles of this barrier being moisture retention, a decline in barrier function means that moisture loss increases. It doesn’t take long before this leads to dehydration. If your skin type is dry, dehydration will likely cause flaking and discomfort. Meanwhile, if your skin type is oily, dehydration can actually stimulate sebum production, making that grease even worse.

To keep your skin looking balanced and fresh, plenty of hydration is essential. Make sure that all of the products in your summer skincare routine have a hydrating element to them. If you’re using a toner to balance surface pH after cleansing, go with a hydrating formula, like the Bionyx Rhodium Facial Toner. The same applies to any serums you use. By all means, pick formulas that are capable of targeting the specific visible skin concerns you’re dealing with, but make sure that they hydrate your skin at the same time.

Of course, don’t forget that internal hydration is crucial as well. If your body is dehydrated, then your skin will feel the same. Make sure that you’re drinking around eight glasses of water a day – or more if you’ve been sweating a lot.

Keep Your Skin Safe From the Sun

It’s no secret that the sun damages the skin. Those UV rays affect the skin in numerous ways, leading to everything from premature wrinkles and dark spots to dullness, dryness, and even skin cancer. If you want to keep your skin looking fresh and youthful, sun protection needs to be a big part of your summer skincare routine.

While this is all common knowledge, it’s easy to make SPF mistakes that leave your skin vulnerable to UV damage. One of the most common is not applying enough sunscreen. Ideally, you want a generous layer over any exposed areas of skin. Pay special attention to those small nooks and crannies that are easy to forget about, such as the eyelids and behind the ears.

Reapplication is also crucial. The majority of sunscreens will only provide protection for a couple of hours. You’ll need to keep topping it up throughout the day to ensure adequate protection.

In addition to using sunscreen religiously, make an effort to stay out of the sun when UV rays are at their strongest (usually between 11 am-3 pm). Keep yourself in the shade during these hours as much as possible. Since no sunscreen is able to provide 100% protection, this is the only way to guarantee that you won’t experience any sun damage.

Understand the Importance of Antioxidants

Antioxidants. A word that gets thrown around a lot in the skincare world, yet many are still unaware of exactly how influential these compounds can be. Simply put, antioxidants are substances that are capable of preventing and reducing the appearance of free radical damage, and UV damage falls into this category. Even when you’re diligent about sun protection, small amounts of visible UV damage are usually inevitable. However, with the use of antioxidants in your summer skincare routine, you’ll be able to keep that to a minimum, ensuring that your skin sports a bright and healthy finish.

People often feel intimidated by all of the different antioxidants out there. When it comes down to it, they’ll all work wonders on your complexion! However, there’s no denying that some antioxidants are more powerful than others. Vitamin C, for example, is well worth having in your skincare routine. Give it a try with the Bionyx BioLift Platinum Deep Wrinkle Concentrate, and you’ll also be treating your skin to a few other potent antioxidants, including vitamins A and E.

The Platinum Transformative Cream is another antioxidant-rich product that’s perfect for a summer skincare routine. In addition to a blend of vitamins, it also contains a selection of plant extracts that are known for their high antioxidant content.

Make the Most of Masks

Platinum Transformative Thermal Mask

While many view face masks as an unnecessary luxury, these products can actually do so much for the skin. Add the right mask to your summer skincare routine, and you could find that your summer-related skin problems suddenly become much less of an issue.

One concern that many have during the summer is excess shine and grease. Clay masks, like the Bionyx Platinum Transformative Thermal Mask, are great for dealing with this. Clay binds to excess sebum, making all of that grease so much easier to remove. This mask also happens to be loaded with antioxidants, providing a double whammy for your skin!

On the other hand, if your main summer skincare issue is dehydration, look for a hydrating mask. Applying the Bionyx Alloy Magnetic Synergy Mask to your skin once a week in the summer will give your skin the moisture boost that it desperately needs.
